First, all the horizontal rows should be read both backwards and forwards, then the vertical, and so on. If a word list is not provided, a way to find words is to go row by row. Lastly, the strategy of looking for double letters in the word being searched for (if a word list is provided) proves helpful, because it is easier to spot two identical letters side-by-side than to search for two different letters. Since most word searches use capital letters, it is easiest to spot the letters that stand out from others. One can then continue this method until the entire word is found.Īnother strategy is to look for 'outstanding' letters within the word one is searching for (if a word list is provided). After finding the letter, one should look at the eight surrounding letters to see whether the next letter of the word is there. Also in common with these latter puzzles, have had complete books and mobile applications devoted to them.Ī common strategy for finding all the words is to go through the puzzle left to right (or right to left) and look for the first letter of the word (if a word list is provided). The puzzles have, like crosswords and arrowords, become very popular. Many word search puzzles have a theme to which all the hidden words are related such as food, animals, or colors. Often a list of the hidden words is provided, but more challenging puzzles may not provide a list. The words may be placed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The objective of this puzzle is to find and mark all the words hidden inside the box. This is a big deal for our kids to have pasta in a tin, but when there’s an educational element to lunch…sometimes you have to give in. Or look for some alphabet pasta in a tin. Unfortunately, I have yet to find alphabet pasta in any shops here, but I do know it is available in many regions. ‘M’ for Mommy, ‘T’ for Tristan, ‘D’ for Daddy, etc.Īs your little one’s recognition of the letters increases you can add more letters to the pot to increase the difficulty of the game.Īnother way to play the alphabet soup game is to ask for specific letters to be scooped out of the pot.Īnother activity to help your child learn letters is to use blocks, and here is how our son learned to spell his name.Īnother extension of this alphabet soup game is to make some alphabet soup of your own. Tristan then liked to serve up his letters for ‘lunch’. You can also make the sound of the letter if you are teaching phonics. The louder they scream the letter has a direct correlation on how much fun they have and how well they remember the letters (only my own opinion, but you can it yourself). If they are a little more confident in their letter recognition, they can holler out the letter. If they are too young, you say the letter and have them repeat it after you. Then ask your child to scoop out a random letter from the pot and identify it. Stir up the letters with a spoon singing/chanting: In the past I have used bowls, or even a brown paper bag will work, just shake it up instead! We used the play pots, but you can use a real pot, or any other item. We chose 3 or 4 letters to start with to make it easier as Tristan was then a novice with his letters. Magnetic letters, or handwritten letters on pieces of paper would also work. We used some foam letters from a puzzle as this is what we had available. It’s a tough job to learn your letters when you’re young! But it’s an important job as they are everywhere! There are hundreds of ways you can help your child to learn their letters, and this is my personal favorite! The Alphabet Soup game and song is an activity I learned from another foreign teacher while I was in Japan, and I’ve been using it ever since! Alphabet soup song and game
